Deduplication
- What deduplication is
Deduplication is an optional feature of Data ONTAP that eliminates duplicate data blocks to reduce the amount of storage space used to store data.
- Considerations for using deduplication
You can run deduplication on all systems that support the NearStore personality or NearStore platform (R200). There are limits on the maximum volume size and the maximum data in a volume with deduplication.
- Deduplication metadata relocated
In Data ONTAP 7.3 and later, part of the metadata resides in the volume and part of it resides in the aggregate outside the volume. The fingerprint database and the change log files are located outside the volume in the aggregate, and are therefore not locked in Snapshot copies.
- Deduplication configuration data relocated
In Data ONTAP 7.3 and later, the deduplication configuration data for a specified volume is located in a metafile within the volume. Before Data ONTAP 7.3, the configuration data was located in the registry of the root volume.
- Activating the deduplication license
Deduplication is an optional feature of Data ONTAP. You can activate the deduplication license after installing Data ONTAP.
- Considerations for using deduplication with other Data ONTAP features
You need to keep certain considerations in mind when using deduplication with other Data ONTAP features, such as volume SnapMirror, qtree SnapMirror, and SnapVault.
- Ways to run deduplication
You can run deduplication on a volume, using a command. You can also create a schedule to run deduplication at specified times.
- Management of deduplication
- vFiler unit integration with deduplication
Starting from Data ONTAP 7.3.1, deduplication is fully supported with vFiler units. Deduplication commands are also available in all vFiler contexts. Deduplication support on vFiler units allows users to reduce redundant data blocks within vFiler units.
- Deduplication commands that are supported on vFiler units
There are several ways to run deduplication commands on vFiler units.
