Considerations for using deduplication with other Data ONTAP features
You need to keep certain considerations in mind when using deduplication with other Data ONTAP features, such as volume SnapMirror, qtree SnapMirror, and SnapVault.
- Volume SnapMirror with deduplication
You can use volume SnapMirror to replicate a deduplicated volume to a secondary storage system (destination).
- Qtree SnapMirror with deduplication
Qtree SnapMirror does not automatically initiate a deduplication operation at the completion of every individual qtree SnapMirror transfers. You can set up a deduplication schedule independent of your qtree SnapMirror transfer schedule.
- Deduplication with SnapVault
The deduplication feature is integrated with SnapVault secondary. This feature increases the efficiency of data backup and improves the use of secondary storage.
- Qtree SnapMirror or SnapVault source transfers some unchanged blocks after deduplication
If qtree SnapMirror or SnapVault updates occur before deduplication completes on the source volume, then in addition to actual changed blocks, the source might also transfer some unchanged blocks to destination during the next update.
- Deduplication and tape backups
Backups to tape, either through NDMP or the native dump command, do not preserve deduplication. Therefore, if you want to immediately start regaining space savings on a volume restored from tape, you must run deduplication operations on the restored volume.
