Reusing disks that are configured for software-based disk ownership

Before you reuse disks from storage systems that have been configured for software-based disk ownership, you should take precautions if you reinstall these disks in storage systems that use hardware-based disk ownership.

Before You Begin

Attention: If disks with unerased software-based ownership information are installed in an unbooted storage system that does not use software-based disk ownership, the storage system will not boot.

Considerations

Take the following precautions, as appropriate:

  • You can transfer the disks to the target storage system while that storage system is in operation, thus automatically erasing their disk ownership information.
  • You can manually erase the disk ownership information for a disk before removing it from its original storage system.
  • If you accidentally cause a boot failure by installing software-assigned disks, you can recover by running the disk remove_ownership command in maintenance mode.
