Managing disk ownership
You can display, assign, and modify disk ownership. If your storage system supports both types of disk ownership, you can change its disk ownership type in most cases. There are some special requirements when reusing disks from a storage system that is using software-based disk ownership.
- Determining whether a system has hardware-based or software-based disk ownership
You need to know which type of disk ownership your storage system is using to properly administer your hot spare disks. You find this out using the storage show command.
- Changing between hardware-based and software-based disk ownership
Hardware-based and software-based disk ownership have different strengths and tradeoffs. If your storage system supports both, you can change the type of disk ownership. In some cases you can do so without affecting data availability.
- Displaying disk ownership
You use disk ownership information on systems that use software-based disk ownership to ensure that your hot spares are correctly assigned, or to troubleshoot disk ownership problems. You view this information with the disk show command.
- Assigning disk ownership
On systems using software-based disk ownership, you assign disks to a controller and pool to make the disks available for use in an aggregate. Assigning disks also enables you to keep your disk firmware up to date. You cannot download firmware to unassigned disks.
- Modifying disk assignments
On systems using software-based disk ownership, you can modify the disk assignment for a hot spare disk that you or Data ONTAP have already assigned. You do this to ensure that both controllers and pools have sufficient hot spares available.
- Reusing disks that are configured for software-based disk ownership
Before you reuse disks from storage systems that have been configured for software-based disk ownership, you should take precautions if you reinstall these disks in storage systems that use hardware-based disk ownership.
