How disk ownership works

Disk ownership determines which node owns a disk and what pool a disk is associated with. Understanding disk ownership enables you to maximize storage redundancy and manage your hot spares effectively.

In a stand-alone storage system that does not use SyncMirror, disk ownership is simple—each disk is assigned to the single controller and is in Pool0. However, the following situations are more complicated:
  • Active/active configurations (two controllers are involved)
  • SyncMirror is in use (two pools are involved)

Disk ownership can be hardware-based or software-based, depending on your storage system model.
