List of Branch Meetings

In the presentations column the first numeral is the number of presentations (including invited presentations). The second numerical is the number of student presentations. The third number is number of student presentations as a percentage of the total number of presentations. In the final column ACT denotes a joint meeting with the ACT branch of ANZIAM.

  1. B1. The 2001 program does not have a list of delegates. I have based attendance upon the number of speakers plus three people known to have attended but not presented: Bronwyn Hajek, Neville de Mestre, Raseelo (Joel) Moitsheki, Natalie Thamwattana. Bronwyn attested to the attendance of Natalie and herself. Joel attested to his own attendance.
  2. B2. Although there were 33 registered delegates, only 30 attended the meeting (Sexton, 2002). So this number should arguable be 30.
  3. B3. According to the report of the meeting they were 35 delegates. The list of delegates that Dr Sheehan Olver sent me contained 34 names. Three people not on this list have informed me that they attended the meeting. So I have listed the attendees as 37.
  4. B4. The 2016 program does not have a list of delegates. However, after the conference one of the organisers, Björn Rüffer, emailed ne a delegates list.
  5. 2001. Obviously (?!) the first meeting of the newly relaunched branch sat a record for the meeting with the most number of delegates (?!).
  6. 2002. This meeting sat a new record for the most number of registered delegates, a record which held until the 2012 meeting at UNSW. However, only 30 of the 33 registered delegates attended the meeting (Sexton, 2002). Counting only delegates who, well, attended (why count the others?) this was the largest branch meeting until 2011.
  7. 2011. This meeting set a new record for the largest number of attendees (31), overtaking the 2002 meeting (which although it had 33 registered delegates only had 30 attendees present). As of 26th November 2018, the 2011 meeting holds the record for the largest meeting outside of the big smoke.
  8. 2012. This meeting sat a new record for the most number of delegates, a record which holds today (26th November 2018).

Winner of the best student presentation at the branch meeting (The Mercer Prize)

After discussion between the ACT and NSW branch committees it was decided in 2017 that the prize for the best student talk at the ACT/NSW branch meeting be named in honour of Professor Geoff Mercer. The inaugural Mercer Prize is to be awarded at the 2018 joint meeting. (Sharples, 2018).

A bold year denotes a joint meeting with the ACT at which the student prize is called The Mercer Prize.

  1. P1 Neville de Mestre (email) thought that the 2001 best student prize was won by one of Jim Hill's students. However, on the program there are no scheduled talks from any University of Wollongong student. Bronwyn Hajek thought that Raseelo (Joel) Moitsheki was the winner and he confirmed this.

Analysis of delegates

How many delegates have attended how many meetings? Before we see the data, a word of explanation. This analysis is based upon attendence at the NSW ANZIAM meetings in 2001-2004, 2006-2013, 2015, 2017-2020 and 2022. There were no meetings organised in 1999, 2000, 2005, 2014 and 2016. I have not yet processed the data for 2021.

The meetings in `2001-2003' and `2009-2012' were held in `remote' locations and I have a `pretty good' handle on the attendees. A list of delegates was attached to the booklet in 2017 and 2020. In addition, two people are known (by me) to have attended who were not listed, these have been included. A list of delegates was attached to the booklet in 2022. Two people who were listed but were unable to attend are not included in the following analysis.

For a discussion of how I reconstructed the delegate lists for the meetings in 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008 please see the corresponding section in Part 4 of this series.

For a discussion of how I reconstructed the delegate lists for the meetings in 2013, 2015, 2018, and 2019, please see the corresponding section in Part 5 of this series.

Analysis of attendence at NSW ANZIAM meetings for the years: (1999-2000), 2001-2004, (2005), 2006-2013, (2014), 2015, (2016), 2017-2020, 2022. There were no meetings organised in 1999, 2000, 2005, 2014 and 2016.

Bibliography

This shows the sources that I have used to write all the articles in this series. (Not necessarily very accurate, as I don't always remember to update things).

  1. Anonymous. (1974). News item reported in The Australian Mathematical Society GAZETTE Volume 1, Number 3, December 1974, page 94.
  2. Anonymous (2014). NSW ANZIAM Meeting 2013. 39th AGM of ANZIAM (04.02.14) Item 7c.
  3. Anonymous (2015). NSW ANZIAM Report 2014. 39th AGM of ANZIAM (03.02.15) Item 7c.
  4. Anonymous (2016). NSW ANZIAM Report 2015. 40th AGM of ANZIAM (09.02.16) Item 7c.
  5. Anonymous (2017). NSW ANZIAM Report 2016. 41st AGM of ANZIAM (07.02.17) Item 7c.
  6. ANZIAM Executive Committee. 2007-2009, 2011-2012.

Contains the branch report that is tabled at the AGM and is unlikely to contain anything else. It appears that sometimes I did not keep the agenda for the AGM, but I kept the minutes for the executive meeting.

  7. Annual General Meeting of ANZIAM. 27th (2001), 30th (2005) -- 43rd (2018).

The branch is supposed to submit a report each year to the ANZIAM executive, which is printed for both the executive meeting and for the ANZIAM AGM. Reports appeared in: 2005-2009. A reports was not submitted in: 2001. I did not attend the AGMs in 2002-2004. I've listed the reports that appeared under the names of the author's elsewhere in this bibliography.

It is sometimes useful to read the minutes of the previous general meeting. This is usually item 2 on the agenda. For instance, the minutes of the 2000 meeting (distributed at the 2001 general meeting) contain a report of what was said by Dr Charlie Macaskill about branch activities in 1999.

Finally, it can be instructive to read the ACT branch report.

  8. Australian Mathematical Society Gazette. Volume 1 (1974), 2 (1975) Number 1 (May) to 3 (December), 3 (1976), 4 (1977) Number 1 (April) to 3 (December), 5 (1978) Number 1 (April) to 3 (December), 6 (1979) to 22 (1995), 23 (1996) Number 1 (April) to 2 (July), Number 4 (November) to 5 (December), 24 (1997)-45 (2018).
  9. I believe that the missing issues 2(4), 4(4) & 5(4) only contained a membership list of the Australian Mathematical Society, i.e. they are not a source of `missing' information.

A detailed reading of the Gazette might reveal a treasure trove of information about the branch. Due to lack of time I have just looked through the index of each issue. That this is problematic is illustrated by the branch report for the 2003 meeting which was printed in the "News" section rather than as an indexed article. (I knew that the 2003 branch meeting report appeared in the Gazette because I wrote it!)
