Curriculum Vitae

Associate Professor, Doctor Le Chung Tran (Humboldt Fellow, WATTLE Fellow, Senior IEEE) received the B. Eng. degree with the first-class honour and highest distinction, and the M. Eng. degree with the highest distinction in Vietnam. He received Ph.D. in telecommunications engineering from University of Wollongong, Australia, in 2006. From 1997 to 2012 he was lecturer at Hanoi University of Transport and Communications, Vietnam. Since 2009, he has been with the University of Wollongong (UOW), Australia. He has achieved numerous national and international awards, including World University Services (WUS) awards (twice), Vietnamese Government's doctoral scholarship, International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS), Tuition Fee Waiver, the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) research fellowships (twice), and the Outstanding Contribution to Learning and Teaching (OCTAL) award. He has successfully applied for research and teaching projects with the total funding of A$2.2 million. He is currently a technical steering committee member of New South Wales (NSW) Connectivity Innovation Network (CIN). He has coauthored 118 publications, including the Springer book Complex Orthogonal Space-Time Processing in Wireless Communications, which is hold in 354 worldwide libraries. He is the director of the Wireless & IoT Laboratory (WIT Lab). He is currently a Technical Steering Committee member of the NSW Connectivity Innovation Network (CIN) where he represents the participation and technical contribution of the University of Wollongong. He is a fellow of WATTLE (Wollongong Academy for Tertiary Teaching and Learning Excellency) (2019 - date). He is also the Associate Editor of the IET Wireless Sensor Systems journal (2021 - date), Guest Editor of MDPI Sensors (2026-date), Editorial Board member of Electrical and Electronics: An International Journal (EEIJ) (2016 - date), and Advisory Board member of the Cambridge Scholar Publishing (CSP) (2018 - date). He has served as a Guest Editor for several Special Issues of internationally recognised transactions, including Sensors. He has also served as a Publicity Co-Chair, Track Chair, Session Chair, Session Co-Chair, and Technical Program Committee (TPC) member of 39 IEEE conferences. At the University of Wollongong, he has served in many governance roles, including, but not limited to, School of Engineering (SOE)'s Leadership Team (Academic Integrity Adviser) (2026-now); member of UOW’s Non-Traditional Research Outcome Verification Committee (NTRO-VC) (2026-2028); member of UOW’s Education Policy and Quality (EPAQ) Subcommittee (2023-2026); UOW’s Student Academic Experience Subcommittee (SAES) (2021-2022); UOW’s Academic Quality and Standard Subcommittee (AQSS) (2019-2021); EIS AD EDI’s Champion and SECTE Coordinator of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) (2020-2025); SECTE Academic Adviser for international applicants (2016-2025); SECTE's Academic Program Director (APD) (either main or acting) of Postgraduate Coursework Degrees (2012-2018); Year Coordinators (3rd and 4th years) (2009-2011); and External PhD supervisor at University of Technology Sydney (UTS) (2018-2021). He has coordinated the establishment of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Credit Transfer Agreement (CTA) and the 2+2 dual bachelor degree programs with Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) - one of the top technical universities in Vietnam (https://www.uow.edu.au/study/credit-for-prior-learning/vietnam/hanoi-university-of-science-and-technology-hust/) - and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand. He has been serving as a Quality Assurer for multiple subjects taught in UOW's offshore campuses (UOWD, ZZU, CCNU) since 2015 to date. His research aims to develop sustainable, fit-for-purpose, innovative solutions to AIoT-powered and communication/telecommunications engineering challenges through a blend of conventional and novel concepts and technologies. His research interests include 5G, AI/IoT, navigation, localisation, positioning, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, ultra-wideband (UWB) communications, space-time-frequency processing for wireless and mobile communications, cooperative and cognitive communications, software defined radio (SDR), network coding, wireless personal area networks (WPANs) and wireless body area networks (WBANs), and digital signal processing for communications.   

 

 

Academic Working Experience

 

» 2006-2008: Postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Signal Processing (ISIP), University of Luebeck, Germany under the Humboldt research fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), Germany. Key roles: undertaking scientific research projects relating to wireless communications (Ultra-Wideband (UWB), Space-Time-Frequency Codes (STFCs), Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO)) and Digital Signal Processing (DSP).

» 2005-2006: Postdoctoral fellow at the Wireless Technologies Laboratory (WTL), Faculty of Informatics, UOW, Australia. Key roles: undertaking ARC (Australian Research Council) and industrial projects relating to wireless communications (UWB, Block Spread OFDM, Multiband OFDM (MB-OFDM)) and DSP.

» 2003-2005: Member of the project led by Prof. Jennifer Seberry and Assoc. Prof. Tadeusz A. Wysocki, UOW. Project's title ``Space-Time Block Codes Using Orthogonal, Amicable and General Designs". The project is funded by ARC Discovery-Grant. Key roles: a team member of the project investigating new structures of Complex Space-Time Block Codes (STBCs) and their applications.

» 2002-2005: Part-time teaching academic at SECTE, UOW, Australia. Key roles: teaching, marking, preparing and demonstrating laboratory experiments (Subjects: ECTE 196 - Internet Technology, 301 - Digital Signal Processing (DSP), 313 - Electronics, 392 - Wireless Internet, 401 - Fast Signal Processing Algorithms, and 901 - Fast Signal Processing Algorithms for Master course).

» 1997-2002: Lecturer at the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications, University of Communication and Transport, Vietnam. Key roles: teaching the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and final year undergraduates; supervising the final year students, and doing researches

 

Practical Working Experience

 

» 2005-2006: Postdoctor at Wireless Technologies Laboratory, UOW. Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Xiaojing Huang. Completed industrial project with Agere Systems's "UWB transceiver development compliant with the WiMedia standard based on OFDM".

» 1998: Part-time engineer for Post &Telecommunications Investment & Construction Joint-Stock Company (PTIC), Vietnam. Completed several commercial projects:

·       Chief designer for extended wireless (microwave) communication system in Thai Nguyen Province;

·       Designer for the optical fibre communication system in Hung Yen Province, Vietnam.
