Career goals
- Carry out impactful and high quality research
- Graduate highly skilled researchers
- Lead an organization or team that produces world-class research outputs and researchers
Teaching
- I teach the following subjects (search Google for Subject Description or search the UoW Handbook for subject contents):
- ECTE 474 (Internet of Things)
- ECTE 967 (Mobile Networks)
- ECTE 992 (Future Internet)
- ECTE 364 (Data Communications)
- ECTE 482 (Network Engineering)
- ECTE 451/457/458/940 -- capstone (two semesters) projects.
- I have supervised more than 70 capstone projects to date. Some projects have appeared in international conferences and top ranked journals.
- ECTE 469 (Queueing Theory and Optimization).
- I have above average teaching score. For example, in a survey conducted in 2021, my average teaching score was 5.26/6. The average faculty teaching score was 4.97. This means for all questions regarding teaching quality, students answered agree or strongly agree. This is also explains why a high number of UoW students decided to continue their research degree with me.
- I also continously update my teaching materials to ensure they provide students with current and in-depth knowledge. I also actively address student feedback.
Governance
- I was the Head of Postgraduate Studies (HPS) for the School of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering (SECTE) 2010 to 2025. I have had the following achievements and responsibilities:
- Designed the coursework for the PhD Integrated degree. This includes designing the subjects to be undertaken by PhD students undertaking the electrical, computer and telecommunications engineering major.
- Streamlined the first year review process; this process has been adopted by all schools in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences. This process requires all research students to present their first year progress at the end of each semester. Student presentations are undertaken over one or two days; each presentation session usually last three hours.
- Ranked scholarship applicants and present them to the faculty and university committees. I also streamlined the process at the school level whereby a voting system is used to determine the top ranked applicants that should be considered at the faculty level.
- Provide timely HPS reports for all thesis examination reports. Among all HPSs at UoW, I am known as the HPS who has the fastest response time.
- I was a key staff member who optimized the journal outputs as part of Australia's national research assessment initiative, namely Excellence in Research Australia (ERA). My effort has resulted in the following results for UoW's Electrical and Eletronic Engineering (FoR 0906) discipline: 2010 (3/5), 2012 (4/5), 2015 (5/5), and 2018 (4/5). Here, a score of 3, 4 and 5 corresponds respectively to "At world standard", 'Above world standard', and 'Well above world standard'.
- I was the Deputy Head of School (Research) for SECTE from 2018 to 2019.
- I was a Research Integrity Advisor (RIA) from 2019 to 2021.
- From 2017-2019, I served as the inagural director of the Signals, Information and Communications Research Institute (SICOM), which is comprised of 18 academics and five major research centers/labs spanning image/video processing, wireless communications to instrumentation and sensors. I remain as the Director of the Wireless Technologies Lab, and has been in this role since 2008.
Research
Most are listed on my main web page. Some notable achievements include:
- In 2020, with my students, we published 12xIEEE Trans. journal articles. In 2021, we published 9xIEEE Internet of Things Journal articles. Both are flagship journals of the IEEE.
- In 2020, more than 90% of my journal publications are in Q1 journals (top-quartile or 25% journals as per Scimago); it has been 100% in recent years.
- I have a track record of attracting top undergraduate students with a First Class Honours degree.
- I have strong authorship in all my publications.
- In the year 2020 and 2021, I was personally managing upward of 20+ research projects; it reached up to 32 projects at one point. All projects completed (students graduate and/or produced high quality publications) on time.
- In the year 2018 to 2022, I have the second highest PhD supervision load among academic staff in the Engineering and Information Sciences (EIS) faculty. From 2020 to 2024, I have had 22 PhD completions; UoW received approximately $125K for each completion from the Australian government, meaning these PhD completions netted UoW approximately AUD $2.75M.
- Most of my students have landed in academia, which is a testament to their research skills and achievements.
- I have been named Top Scholar by ScholarGPS in 2024, which equates to being in the top 0.5% of researchers in the following areas: (i) wireless sensor network, (ii) wireless, (iii) sensor, and (iv) energy. I am ranked one in these areas for UoW.
- Invited by the Editor in Chief (Prof. Nei Kato) in 2023 to be an Associate Editor (AE) of IEEE Internet of Things Journal (IoTJ) in recognition of the number of reviews (250+) and papers for/in IEEE IoTJ.
Others
- Consultancy -- From 2004 to 2005, I led a team of engineers to complete projects in the industry and in industry sponsored projects; some of which are worth more than $500K AUD.
- I have been a thesis examiner for (i) University of Technology Sydney (3xPhDs), (ii) Otago University (2xPhDs), (iii) Macquarie University (1xMPhil), and (iv) Curtin University (2xPhDs).
Industry (2000 to 2003)
At Motorola, I have had the following achievements:
- Filed 9 United States Patents, with four granted; others were abandoned by Motorola after I left. The four granted patents are highly cited by other patents.
- Solved a critical problem that led to a salary rise in the first six months of joining.
- Promoted from Research Engineer to Senior Research Engineer.
- Made more than 30 technological transfers to product groups.
- Represented Motorola at IEEE 802.15.3 working group meetings held from 2003 to 2005.
