Resizing a SnapMirror source and destination volume pair

You can increase the size of a volume SnapMirror source. In the next update, volume SnapMirror will make an identical increase to the file system size of the destination, if the destination volume size is enough to contain the larger file system size.

Considerations

Before increasing the size of a source volume, you need to compare the size of the source and destination volumes, for a specific volume SnapMirror relationship. If the destination volume is not large enough to contain the larger source volume, you will need to manually resize the destination volume.

Note: In an active volume SnapMirror relationship, the file system sizes of the source and destination volumes are identical. However, the volume size of the destination can be larger than or identical to the volume size of the source. The identical file system sizes are required if you need to restore the source from the destination.

Steps

  1. On the source storage system, enter the following command to check whether the fs_size_fixed option is off.vol status volname -v

    volname is the name of the source volume for SnapMirror.

    Example

    SRC_A> vol status sm_src -v
             Volume State           Status            Options
             sm_src online          raid_dp, flex     nosnap=off, nosnapdir=off,
                                                      minra=off, no_atime_update=off,
                                                      nvfail=off,
                                                      ignore_inconsistent=off,
                                                      snapmirrored=off,
                                                      create_ucode=off,
                                                      convert_ucode=off,
                                                      maxdirsize=31457,
                                                      schedsnapname=ordinal,
                                                      fs_size_fixed=off,
                                                      compression=off,
                                                      guarantee=volume, svo_enable=off,
                                                      svo_checksum=off,
                                                      svo_allow_rman=off,
                                                      svo_reject_errors=off,
                                                      no_i2p=off,
                                                      fractional_reserve=100,
                                                      extent=off,
                                                      try_first=volume_grow,
                                                      read_realloc=off,
                                                      snapshot_clone_dependency=off
                    Containing aggregate: 'aggr1'

                    Plex /aggr1/plex0: online, normal, active
                        RAID group /aggr1/plex0/rg0: normal

    Note: If the fs_size_fixed option is set to off, the file system size of the destination volume might be different from that of the source volume. For restoring the source volume from the SnapMirror destination, the source and destination volumes should have identical file system sizes. When the volume SnapMirror relationship is in an Idle status, and once the the destination volume size is increased, then you can change this option on the source storage system.

  2. Depending on the value of the fs_size_fixed option, choose one of the following actions.
    If... Then...
    The fs_size_fixed option is set to off. Go to the next step.
    The fs_size_fixed option is set to on. On the source storage system, enter the following command:vol options volname fs_size_fixed off

    volname is the name of the source volume for SnapMirror.

    SRC_A> vol options sm_src fs_size_fixed off

  3. On the source storage system, enter the following command to find the size of the volume and the file system, for the source volume.vol status volname -b

    volname is the name of the SnapMirror source volume.

    Example

    SRC_A> vol status sm_src -b
    Volume Block Size (bytes) Vol Size (blocks) FS Size (blocks)
    ------              ------------------  ------------------  ----------------
    sm_src              4096                256000              256000

  4. On the destination storage system, enter the following command to find the size of the volume and the file system, for the destination volume.vol status volname -b

    volname is the name of the SnapMirror destination volume.

    Example

    DST_B> vol status sm_dst -b
    Volume Block Size (bytes) Vol Size (blocks) FS Size (blocks)
    ------              ------------------  ------------------  ----------------
    sm_dst              4096                512000              256000

  5. Compare the size of the volume and the file system, for the source and destination pair of a SnapMirror relationship.

    Note: The destination volume can contain a source volume up to the volume size of the destination. If you want the source volume to be larger than the destination volume, you need to manually increase the size of the destination volume.

    Example

    In the example shown in the previous steps, the destination volume size is greater than the source volume size.

  6. Depending on the present size of the SnapMirror destination volume, choose one of the following actions.
    If the size of the destination volume... Then...
    Is enough to contain the intended increase in the size of the source volume. Go to step 8.
    Needs to be increased to contain the intended increase in the size of the source volume. Go to the next step.
  7. Depending on the type of the volume, choose one of the following actions to increase the size of the SnapMirror destination volume.
    If the volume type is... Then use this command to increase the size of the volume...
    FlexVol volume vol size volname size

    volname is the name of the SnapMirror source volume.

    size is the required size of the SnapMirror source volume.

    Note: When you use this command for a SnapMirror destination FlexVol volume, the system displays the following message.
    Warning: Volume 'sm_dst' is a replica. This will not change the file system size in the replica, which is set from the replica source. The new volume size will be used to set the upper limit on replica transfers into this volume.

    vol size: Flexible volume 'sm_dst' size limit set to new_size.
    Traditional volume vol add volname disks

    volname is the name of the SnapMirror source volume.

    disks is the number of disks that you want to add to the traditional volume.

    You can use the vol status command to confirm the increase in the source volume size.

    Note: You can increase the destination volume size to be equal to or greater than the intended increased size of the source volume.

  8. Perform step 7 for the source volume, to increase the size of the SnapMirror source volume.
  9. On the source storage system, enter the following command.vol options volname fs_size_fixed on

    volname is the name of the source volume for SnapMirror. This option ensures that the file system size of the SnapMirror source and destination volumes are identical.

    Note: SnapMirror updates the file system size of the destination volume to match the source in the next SnapMirror transfer for the volume pair.
