How SnapLock automatically commits files to WORM state

The SnapLock autocommit feature, available in Data ONTAP 7.2 and later, is an adjustable timer that commits files to the WORM state if the file does not change during a specified delay period. You can automatically commit files on a SnapLock volume to the WORM state without using any other application. This way of committing files permits existing applications to be used with SnapLock without any change.

The minimum delay that can be specified is two hours. Autocommit does not take place instantly when the delay period ends; instead, it is a minimum amount of time that will pass before the storage system queues up the service to interrogate the file system to see which files are eligible for locking. Autocommits are performed using a scanner and can take some time.

Note: The file that is automatically committed to the WORM state will get a retention period equal to the volume's default retention period. However, if you explicitly change the atime of the file before the autocommit, the file's retention period will be the atime set by you.
