Overview

The Bachelor of Primary Education (Honours) is a course of advanced studies in research methodologies open to high achieving students who have demonstrated excellence in the first three years of the Bachelor of Primary Education (371) or the Bachelor of Primary Education (Dean's Scholar) (1897).

Course Learning Outcomes

Course Learning Outcomes are statements of learning achievement that are expressed in terms of what the learner is expected to know, understand and be able to do upon completion of a course. Students graduating from this course will be able to:

7 Demonstrate understanding of compliance requirements related to mandated curricula, professional accreditation and the implementation of legislated policy.
8 Demonstrate knowledge of research methodologies and research ethics through the design execution and reporting on a substantial research project.

Course Structure

The Bachelor of Primary Education (Honours) requires:

  1. The successful completion of 192 credit points as specified in the table below, including the Professional Experience components embedded in the course.
  2. Students must successfully complete 36 credit points from the Year 1 subjects to be eligible for the first Professional Experience and to enrol in Year 2 subjects. Students should also note that a number of subject pre-requisites will be in place throughout the course.
  3. To be eligible for the final Professional Experience, students must have passed all core subjects in the first three and a half years of their degree, successfully completed the Literacy and Numeracy Test (LANTITE) and be enrolled in any annual and final semester core subjects.
  4. Students must successfully complete all subject requirements, including the teaching performance assessment (UOW TPA) in EDPD402, to be eligible to graduate.
  5. The Honours grade will be calculated using Method 2.  For further information refer to the Coursework Rules.

Students may choose to complete the Mathematics and Numeracy in Education minor.

Mathematics and Numeracy in Education Minor

Students have the option of completing the Mathematics and Numeracy in Education minor, however, it should be noted that this will be in addition to the minimum degree requirements and may extend the duration of the degree. This minor will offer students the opportunity to develop more comprehensive discipline and pedagogical knowledge, so they can facilitate enriched teaching practices in primary school classrooms. Subjects completed in this minor will count towards the NESA recognised Mathematics/Numeracy specialisation.

Compulsory Work Placement / Online Components 

This course contains a total of 595 hours or approximately 85 days of compulsory work-based placements, completed over 25 weeks throughout the degree. This course may also contain compulsory components to be completed online.  

Professional Recognition/Accreditation

This degree is accredited and recognised as a national professional teaching qualification.  All students will receive a national English/Literacy specialisation on successful completion of the program.

A NSW specialisation in Mathematics/Numeracy is available to students with relevant interest and aptitude. Subjects required to qualify for the NSW Mathematics/Numeracy specialisation include: EDMM101, MATH132, EDKM201, EDKM202, EDEM302 and EDEM401 . NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) recognised teaching specialisations are applied to teacher registration documentation and may give candidates a competitive edge when applying for positions in government schools.Students seeking work outside NSW or Australia are advised to check with potential employers and other teacher registration authorities for any additional requirements.
