Legal Studies Major | 2020 

Majoring in Legal Studies will provide you with a sound understanding of the Australian Legal System and its court structure. You will learn key aspects of private law in Australia, including principles of the law of contract and torts, and be able to critically examine the relationship between law and justice. This flexible major allows you to create a degree around your interests by combining Legal Studies with other study areas.

This major consists of four core subjects with a broad range of elective options, including family law, international business law and taxation law. In your final year you will undertake a Law Research Project where you will work with a supervisor on a research topic to produce a thesis addressing real-world issues, using knowledge and skills obtained in the Legal Studies major.

The Legal Studies major is not available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts - Bachelor of Laws degree.

Major Learning Outcomes

On completing this major students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate an understanding of the foundations of Australia’s legal system including its key legal institutions
2 Demonstrate familiarity with the form of both statutory law and case law
3 Be familiar with key aspects of private law in Australia, in particular, principles of the law of contract and tort

5 Understand the international context within which the law operate
6 Develop problem solving skills, as well as skills for group and teamwork

Minor Study

A 24 credit point minor in Legal Studies is available. Information can be found on the 2020 General Schedule of Minors page.

Students cannot complete both a major and a minor in Legal Studies.

Work Integrated Learning

Undertaking a work integrated learning experience during your university education is now a significant contributor to being competitive in securing employment in your field of choice when you graduate from UOW.

The internship program provides students with an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in their degree in a workplace setting.

Students are also encouraged to consider CRLP200 'Career Ready Learning and Practice' (6cp). CRLP200 includes a quality assured workplace internship or industry project to give you that competitive edge by developing your professional skills through authentic learning in a real world context. You will focus on your career goals and receive career direction guidance, strengthen your resume and gain skills to navigate the rapidly changing world of work, develop your communication skills and begin to build a professional network.
