Overview 

In our increasingly connected and digital world, communicators with broad skills are in real demand. 

The Bachelor of Communication and Media offers you a strong foundation in the national and international communication and media industry. With a focus on preparing you for global careers the course places an emphasis on high-level skills in media production, communication research and independent project work.

This degree is designed for careers in digital and social media; visual communication design; journalism; screen media production; marketing; advertising; and public relations. You will be immersed in the study and practice of media and communication, and will gain flexible and transferable skills that will prepare you for the ever-changing world of global media culture.

Course Learning Outcomes

Course Learning Outcomes are statements of learning achievement that are expressed in terms of what the learner is expected to know, understand and be able to do upon completion of a course. Students graduating from this course will be able to:

2 Demonstrate practical production skills appropriate to one or more of digital and social media, global screen media, visual communication design, journalism, and marketing communication and advertising;
3 Communicate effectively and ethically across a wide range of contexts, and contribute at a high level to the circulation of ideas and information;
4 Demonstrate the capacity to work independently and in teams, to manage continuous professional self-development, and to sustain professional relationships with integrity;
5 Synthesise conceptual, analytical and practical production skills to address complex issues in media and communication;
6 Develop novel solutions and resources that demonstrate expertise in media and communication.

Course Structure

To qualify for award of the degree, the Bachelor of Communication and Media, a candidate must successfully complete at least 144 credit points, comprised of:

  1. Core subjects for the Bachelor of Communication and Media, outlined in the schedule below (48 credit points);
  2. At least one of the five majors in this degree (48 credit points):       
  1. Electives to bring the total number of credit points completed to 144.

Students may not undertake a Major and Minor Study in the same discipline (for example, students cannot take both a major and a minor in Journalism).

Work Integrated Learning

Undertaking a work integrated learning experience during your university education is now a significant contributor to being competitive in securing employment in your field of choice when you graduate from UOW.

The internship program provides students with an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in their degree in a workplace setting.

Students' are also encouraged to consider CRLP200 'Career Ready Learning and Practice' (6cp). CRLP200 includes a quality assured workplace internship or industry project to give you that competitive edge by developing your professional skills through authentic learning in a real world context. You will focus on your career goals and receive career direction guidance, strengthen your resume and gain skills to navigate the rapidly changing world of work, develop your communication skills and begin to build a professional network.

INDS208 Working with Indigenous Communities is an elective subject available to all students. INDS208 fosters work skills, cultural competency and develops student awareness of Indigenous knowledges and community practices.

Honours

Honours is a fourth year of study that provides training in independent research. Students who complete the single degree with the required academic standard are encouraged to proceed to the Bachelor of Communication and Media (Honours).
