Overview

The Bachelor of Health Science (Indigenous Health) is a degree open to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. The course covers areas including community health, community development, cultural issues, comparative Indigenous health issues and Indigenous health research; which are complemented with study in Aboriginal Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Education and other related areas.

Job opportunities include working in the community sector, in Aboriginal Medical Services or with State or Federal health agencies. Graduates may be interested in working in a rural or remote community, or in community development, health promotion, planning or policy.

Assistance is given to Indigenous students via Commonwealth funded 'away from base allowances' and the Woolyungah Indigenous Centre will assist students by providing tutors, access to support staff and resources, and helping individual students find their best method of study.

2 Critically review, analyse and synthesise information relating to evidence-based health care practice and disease prevention for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
3 Exercise critical thinking and judgement to identify and independently solve problems relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.
4 Communicate perspectives in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health to diverse audiences using a range of communication strategies.
5 Apply the concepts of community development, ownership, consultation, empowerment, capacity-building, reciprocity and respect to health care delivery and working/researching with Indigenous individuals and communities.
6 Demonstrate ethical, professional, public and personal conduct and capacity to reflect on and direct own learning and practice and participate constructively in decision-making with the context of Aboriginal Health.
7 Develop strategies for the promotion of equitable health care practice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Course Structure
