Overview 

The Bachelor of Nursing prepares students for professional practice as registered nurses, by providing knowledge and skills to think critically and reflect across all aspects of nursing practice. The course incorporates a range of nursing subjects, basic sciences, research, ethics and professional subjects relevant to contemporary nursing practice.


At the completion of the course, graduates will be able to deliver confident, safe and person centered care in a variety of health care settings. Throughout the 3 year course, students will attend 840 hours of off-campus workplace experience in a variety of settings and different local health districts. Students can expect to travel up to 2 hours to attend their workplace experience.

Course Structure

To qualify for award of the degree, the Bachelor of Nursing, a candidate must successfully complete at least 144 credit points in accordance with the table below.

In order to attend workplace experience, students must meet NSW Health Department requirements in regard to Criminal Record Checks and Infectious Disease. Students who do not meet these requirements will not be able to attend workplace experience and therefore will not be able to continue in the Bachelor of Nursing. A part time pathway can be negotiated with the Bachelor of Nursing Academic Program Director. 

Candidates should note that pre- and co-requisites apply to many subjects in the course. Satisfactory completion of all Year 2 nursing theory and practice subjects is a pre-requisite to enrolment in Year 3 nursing theory and practice subjects. The reason for these prescriptions is that the School of Nursing has a legal responsibility to ensure that candidates meet nursing theory and practice requirements at each level of the course.

Compulsory Work Placement / Online Components 

This course contains a total of 840 hours over 21 weeks of compulsory work-based placements. This course may also contain compulsory components to be completed online.

Honours

An Honours degree program is available for eligible students. For further information refer to the separate entry for Bachelor of Nursing (Honours).

Professional Recognition/Accreditation

Graduates may be eligible to apply to register with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) through the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) subject to meeting the registration standards, including English language proficiency. NMBA currently requires an overall IELTS score of 7.0, and at least 7.0 in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Results must have been obtained no more than 2 years prior to applying for registration. Therefore graduates will be required to take a further IELTS test even if the required results were demonstrated prior to enrolment in the Bachelor of Nursing.
