Bachelor of Arts - Bachelor of International Studies | 2018

Overview

This double degree program allows students to combine the international focus of the Bachelor of International Studies with one of the majors offered by the Bachelor of Arts. Students may take majors offered in the Bachelor of Arts that either complement the international focus of the Bachelor of International Studies, or expand their career opportunities through an interdisciplinary focus.

Course Learning Outcomes

The course learning outcomes in each of these degrees complement and consolidate outcomes in the partner degree. Applied across two discipline areas, the outcomes are achieved at a broader and more comprehensive level.

Course Structure

To qualify for award of this degree students must complete a minimum of 216 credit points.

The 216 credit points shall include:

1. The core subjects prescribed for the Bachelor of International Studies;
2. One of the majors listed for the Bachelor of International Studies (48 credit points);
3. A minimum of a minor in a language other than English (students may elect to take a major in a language);
4. At least one of the majors listed for the Bachelor of Arts (minimum 48 and maximum 60 credit points);
5. A second major (minimum 48 and maximum 60 credit points), or a minor (minimum 24 credit points), from within the Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts; and
6. Electives to bring the total credit points to 216;
7. No more than 90 credit points in 100-level subjects;
8. A clear pass must be achieved in the core 300 level subjects.

Majors

Students completing this degree will complete at least two majors. One chosen from the Bachelor of International Studies, and one from the Bachelor of Arts. Details of the majors available can be found on each handbook page.

As part of their Bachelor of Arts Component, students in this double degree will also choose either a second BA Major, or a BA Minor.

Minors

As part of the Bachelor of International Studies component of this program, students will take at least one minor in a language other than English.

Students may also take other Minors as part of their double degree program provided they meet the requirements set.

Minors appear on the transcript (i.e. academic record), but do not appear on the testamur. To have a minor study recorded, students must submit an Application to Declare or Change Intended Major/Minor.

Work Integrated Learning

Undertaking a work integrated learning (WIL) experience during your university education is now a significant contributor to being competitive in securing employment in your field of choice when you graduate from UOW.

The Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts internship program provides students with an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in their degree in a workplace setting.

Some BA Majors will have a specific internship subject available for students. Otherwise, students can consider CRLP200 (6cp). CRLP200 includes a quality assured workplace internship or industry project to give you that competitive edge by developing your professional skills through authentic learning in a real world context. You will focus on your career goals and receive career direction guidance, strengthen your resume and gain skills to navigate the rapidly changing world of work, develop your communication skills and begin to build a professional network.
 

Honours

Honours is a further one year full-time (or two years part-time) course that provides training in independent research.  Students who complete the double degree with the required academic standard in a relevant major are encouraged to proceed to either the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) or the Bachelor of International Studies (Honours).  Honours may be undertaken by students who meet the requirements for enrolment.  Please refer to the Honours handbook pages for the single degrees for further information about these degrees.
