Overview

The Bachelor of Science Education at UOW is a four-year degree that involves deepening your knowledge of science and developing the skills to implement this knowledge in modern secondary classrooms.

Teaching the next generation of scientists requires specific skills, and in the Bachelor of Science Education degree you will combine studying science and education subjects at university with extensive professional experience in secondary schools. Science subjects including Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, and Physics are complemented with education subjects about teaching strategies, building your professional teaching skills, developing children’s literacy and numeracy skills, teaching children with special needs, using ICT in the classroom and classroom management.

Entry Requirements and Credit Arrangements

Information on academic and English language requirements, as well as eligibility for credit for prior learning, is available from the Course Finder.

Course Learning Outcomes

Course Learning Outcomes are statements of learning achievement that are expressed in terms of what the learner is expected to know, understand and be able to do upon completion of a course. Students graduating from this course will be able to demonstrate:

CLO Description
1 Demonstrate broad and coherent theoretical and practical knowledge of ducational principles within the context of secondary science teaching
2 Demonstrate coherent core knowledge of the fundamentals of secondary science disciplines
3 Demonstrate depth and breadth of knowledge in one or more discipline areas of sciences
4 Demonstrate their cognitive and technical skills to create teaching tools and critically review, analyse, synthesise and solve problems within a scientific field
5 Demonstrate critical thinking and judgement when problem solving and identifying the complexities of their role as secondary science teachers
6 Demonstrate the ability to clearly communicate educational knowledge and scientific principles and problem solving skills in the teaching environment
7 Demonstrate autonomy and problem solving ability in professional practice, including differentiation of pedagogical strategies, planning teaching and learning activities and reflection on practice within secondary science education
8 Demonstrate their capacity to be reflective practitioners with an evolving understanding of the multi-faceted role of the teacher within the learning environment

Course Structure

The Bachelor of Science Education requires the successful completion of at least 192 credit points. Students are required to select a first teaching area in one of the following: Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science or Physics, and complete the subjects specified in the relevant table.

In addition to the course work requirements, students are required to complete the compulsory Professional Experience components embedded in the course.

Students must successfully complete 36 credit points from the Year 1 subjects to be eligible for the first Professional Experience and to enrol in Year 2 subjects. Students should also note that a number of subject pre-requisites will be in place throughout the course. Alternative arrangements are only possible with permission from the Academic Program Director and Head of Students.

Students must have passed all core subjects in their degree and be enrolled in any annual and final semester core subjects to be eligible for their final Professional Experience.

A maximum of 60 credit points at 100 level will count towards the degree.

Biology as First Teaching Area

In addition to qualifying for Biology as a first teaching area, students may choose to qualify for a second teaching area in Physics, Chemistry or Earth and Environmental Science by choosing different elective options.
For Chemistry as a second teaching area, students will need to complete at least two CHEM subjects.
For Earth and Environmental Science as a second teaching area, students will need to complete one EESC subject.
For Physics as a second teaching area, students will need to complete two PHYS subjects.  Note that PHYS subjects often have MATH pre-requisites.

Please note that in order to qualify for a second teaching area, students may need to exceed the minimum degree requirement of 192cp, with no more than 60cp of 100 level subjects counting towards the degree.
