Overview

Studying communications and commerce provides you with an understanding of the business and commercial environment including management, operations and marketing, accounting, economics and finance. You will be able to research, plan, execute and manage marketing campaigns and acquire skills in issue management, product publicity, crisis communications, and media relations.

The Bachelor of Communication and Media - Bachelor of Commerce teaches you communication and business practices, the use of different technologies, and the integration of these with our professional, social and political lives. It will equip you with essential broad skills, including critical and creative thinking, effective communication and problem solving, negotiation, collaboration and time management, all of which are required for high achievement in a range of business and media careers. The degree has a strong focus on international media and business, and encourages an understanding of how producers and consumers interact in a media saturated world.

Course Learning Outcomes

A number of the course learning outcomes in each of these degrees complement and consolidate outcomes in the partner degree. Applied across two discipline areas, the outcomes are achieved at a broader and more comprehensive level.

The outcomes which are common and consolidated in this joint degree ensure that on successful completion of the course students will be able to:

Course Structure

To qualify for award of this degree, students must complete a minimum of 216 credit points comprised of:

  1. Core subjects (including the capstone subject) from the Bachelor of Commerce (54 credit points);
  2. At least one major from the Bachelor of Commerce (48 credit points);
  3. The core subjects prescribed for the Bachelor of Communication and Media (48 credit points)
  4. At least one major from the Bachelor of Communication and Media (48 credit points);
  5. Electives to bring the total credit points to 216;
  6. No more than 90 credit points in 100-level subjects.

Majors

Students completing this degree will complete at least two majors. One chosen from the Bachelor of Communication and Media, and one from the Bachelor of Commerce. Follow the links to the Course Handbook pages for each degree for information on majors available.

Students can take Minors as part of their double degree program provided they meet the requirements set. Minor studies consist of a minimum of 24 credit points of which at 12 credit points are at 200 level or higher.

Minors appear on the transcript (academic record), but do not appear on the testamur. To have a minor study recorded, students submit an Application to Declare or Change Intended Major/Minor.

Work Integrated Learning

Undertaking a work integrated learning (WIL) experience during your university education is now a significant contributor to being competitive in securing employment in your field of choice when you graduate from UOW.

The Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts internship program provides students with an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in their degree in a workplace setting.

Students' are also encouraged to consider CRLP200 (6cp). CRLP200 includes a quality assured workplace internship or industry project to give you that competitive edge by developing your professional skills through authentic learning in a real world context. You will focus on your career goals and receive career direction guidance, strengthen your resume and gain skills to navigate the rapidly changing world of work, develop your communication skills and begin to build a professional network.

Honours

Honours is a fourth year of study that provides training in independent research. Students who complete the double degree with the required academic standard in the relevant major are encouraged to proceed to the Honours degree in either the Bachelor of Communication and Media (Honours) or the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours).
