2018 Undergraduate Courses
  • Students are to follow the requirements of the Handbook for the year they commenced the course.

However, the subject links below do not contain the subject information for the current year. You can view current subject information through the new Course Handbook.

Bachelor of Pre-Medicine, Science and Health (Molecular Medicine) | 2018

The Molecular Medicine major provides the foundation for understanding and training in the latest, cutting edge techniques that underpin chemical sciences in health and medicine. In addition to core general and organic chemistry subjects, the second year will cover inorganic chemistry and molecular structure, leading into more advanced organic and medicinal chemistry in the third year, along with molecular spectroscopy. Training in a wide range of techniques that underpin molecular medicine including organic synthesis, various spectroscopic techniques, computer-aided drug development and pharmacology is provided through the laboratory component of the subjects giving students hands-on experience in these areas.

Potential future pathways for further education include progression to postgraduate medicine, or a research-based Honours or Masters program in organic or medicinal chemistry. As a graduate of this major professional career pathways include but are not limited to, health and medical research, pharmaceutical chemistry / drug design and development, forensic applications, patents, clinical trials, industrial chemistry, Government laboratories, consulting, marketing and education.

Major Learning Outcomes

Students graduating from a major in Molecular Medicine will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate extensive and coherent knowledge of the principles and concepts associated with chemistry.

  2. Demonstrate technical and cognitive skills associated with chemistry by locating, analysing and synthesising information to generate solutions to complex problems.
