Overview
The Master of Research offered by the Faculty of Law, Humanities, and the Arts comprises research and research training, requiring students to complete 96 credit points of subjects. The first year comprises 48 credit points of research training and coursework while the second year comprises a 48 credit point thesis, which may be assessed by two external examiners. Academic Units may award advanced standing for the research training and coursework component and will determine the appropriate entry point.
Students can apply for entry at any time with both beginning and mid-year intakes, and the degree can be undertaken full or part-time.
The following research areas are available in the Faculty of Law, Humanities, and the Arts: English, History, Politics, Sociology, Indigenous Studies, Language and Linguistics, International Studies, Philosophy, Cultural Studies, and Science and Technology Studies.
The degree suits students who have just finished their undergraduate degrees but who want the applied skills and industry recognition that comes with the Master of Research. It also suits those returning to study and students interested in gaining extra research training on the way to a PhD. The Master of Research is perfect for students who want training from experts in research methods and who would benefit from completing a substantial research project.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems and concepts and apply established theories to identified discipline areas.
- Understand, in the context of an advanced body of knowledge, recent developments in an identified discipline area.
- With creativity and initiative, plan a substantial piece of research using advanced knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to the identified discipline area.
- Communicate effectively, to a range of audiences, coherent and sustained arguments to evaluate and justify the selected research question, research design and interpretation of research results.
- Implement a substantial piece of research that shows mastery of, and the capacity for critical reflection on, the application of theoretical knowledge with a high level of personal autonomy, accountability and regards for conventions for research integrity, privacy and integrity issues.
- Disseminate research outcomes to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Course Structure
The Master of Research degree comprises both research and research training, requiring students to complete 96 credit points of subjects, as specified in the chosen area of study.
In the first year, students will do four subjects that provide a comprehensive foundation in social research methods. These subjects are: LHA 401 / LHA 901 The Writer: Critic, Analyst, Voice; LHA 402 / LHA 902 : The Researcher: People, Places, Methods; LHA 403 / LHA 903 : The Project and the Plan and a choice of one discipline specific subject from an area of study.
