Overview

The Honours program is a reward and recognition program for high achieving students who have three Band 5 scores in their HSC results, including one in English.  It also provides a fourth year Honours option for students who have demonstrated excellence in the first three years of the Bachelor of Primary Education (371) or the Bachelor of Primary Education (Dean's Scholar) (1897).

Course Learning Outcomes

Students graduating from the Bachelor of Primary Education (Honours) degree will demonstrate:

  1. An understanding of the complex multi-faceted role of the teacher and the learning environment;
  2. Skills in regards to leadership, problem solving, technology and planning for all learners; differentiation of pedagogical strategies and reflection on practice;
  3. Skills of an active professional who is articulate in regards to the theory-practice nexus its role and theirs as the teacher as researcher;
  4. Higher order thinking in relation to current and future educational challenges;
  5. The ability to manipulate academic literature and mandatory documents that relate to research, pedagogy and policy;
  6. An understanding of the available research methodologies and their manipulation to design and implement a research project;
  7. Ethical and responsible behaviour;
  8. The successful completion of a sustained independent research project utilising the skills of analysis, synthesis and knowledge that will identify the research findings pertaining to an educational issue; and
  9. The ability to coherently communicate to a variety of audiences the research findings. 

Course Structure

The Bachelor of Primary Education (Honours) requires the following:

  1. The successful completion of 192 credit points, comprising:
    1. 29 core subjects (186cp);
    2. 1 elective subject (6cp); and
    3. No more than 60 credit points will be at 100 level. 
  2. To progress to the final year of the Honours degree, students must achieve a minimum weighted average mark (WAM) of at least 75 across the first 3 years of the program, and complete all core subjects and Professional Experience components. Students who do not meet this requirement will be required to transfer to the Bachelor of Primary Education (371).
  3. The Honours grade will be calculated using Method 2. For further information refer to the General Course Rules.

Catholic Education Electives

Students seeking accreditation with the Catholic Education Office (CEO) are required to complete all four EDTR subjects listed in the table below, however, only one of these (6cp) will count towards the degree.  To receive full CEO accreditation, students will need to complete additional requirements.  Students must liaise with the CEO in regards to the additional accreditation requirements.

Collaborative Delivery

The Catholic Education subjects are partially delivered through a collaborative arrangement with the Broken Bay Institute (BBI). Subjects will be taught by a tutor from BBI. Please contact the School for additional information.

Professional Recognition/Accreditation

This degree is accredited and nationally recognised as a professional teaching qualification. Students seeking work outside NSW or Australia are advised to check with potential employers and other teacher registration authorities for any additional requirements.

All students completing a NSW teacher education course will need to pass an approved literacy and numeracy test.

Students seeking accreditation with the Catholic Education Office are required to successfully complete all four EDRT subjects ( EDTR201 , EDTR202 , EDTR203 , EDTR204 ), however, only up to 6cp may count towards this degree. To finalise CEO accreditation, students will need to complete two CEO approved theology subjects within the first five years of teaching. Students need to liaise with the CEO in regards to CEO accreditation.
