Overview

The Master of Education Advanced is a higher degree for both professional educators and for those who are interested in pursuing a career in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). The degree extends the learning outcomes of the Master of Education, in a two year program.

The degree introduces participants to contemporary trends and issues in research, theory and practice of TESOL.  It provides students with an in-depth understanding of areas such as second language development, discourse analysis, pedagogical grammars, research methods, language assessment, English for specific purposes, and computer assisted language learning.  Students in this advanced masters degree broaden their TESOL study by undertaking further study in one of two areas:

  • Educational Leadership
  • Information and Communication Technology in Education and Training.

Course Learning Outcomes

Students graduating from the Master of Education Advanced will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of a complex body of knowledge in two disciplines associated with the field of education within national and international contexts.
  2. Analyse critically, reflect on and synthesise complete information, problems, concepts and theories.
  3. Conduct independent research and inquiry, involving higher order conceptualisation, new ideas and personal initiative.
  4. Interpret and transmit educational knowledge, pedagogical and professional skills, and ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  5. Communicate effectively and collaboratively with stakeholders through variety of modes in the educational landscape.
  6. Use advanced knowledge and critical thinking skills to solve complex problems in the educational field.
  7. Act responsibly, ethically and professionally with diverse populations at local, national and global levels.

Course Structure

To qualify for award of the degree of Master of Education Advanced, a student must complete a total of at least 96 credit points, including:

  1. Requirements of the TESOL specialisation (60 credit points);
  2. At least 24 credit points in a single second area of study; and
  3. Elective subjects required to complete the degree, if required.

The degree will have no more than 24 credit points (four subjects) at 800 level.

Professional Recognition/Accreditation

The Master of Education Advanced (TESOL) is an approved postgraduate ESL program for Department of Education (DE)  teachers wishing to qualify as ESL teachers.  DE accreditation will be dependent upon subject choice.
