The Honours programme in the Graduate School of Medicine is designed to provide students with skills to demonstrate excellence in ethical research, integrated with a clear understanding of a specific research question in relation to current knowledge. The degree programme fosters abilities and skills in: research ethics; identifying and refining a research question; planning, designing and conducting a research project; using and refining research methods; collecting, analysing and evaluating data; synthesising and integrating results with relevant ideas, concepts and existing knowledge; communicating ideas and findings.

The Honours year, is a stand-alone Honours programme at the conclusion of an MBBS. In addition to undertaking an Honours Project, students will be expected to spend the equivalent of one day a week in a clinical setting.

The Honours year is targeted towards people who:

    • wish to pursue an add-on Honours year at the completion of the MBBS

    • have a passion and interest in research and the ambition to pursue a higher research degree

    • wish to pursue academic medicine as a career option

Entry Requirements / Assumed Knowledge

To qualify for admission to the University of Wollongong - Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (Hons) applicants must hold a Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent. It is essential for candidates to demonstrate a high level of academic performance, as determined by the Graduate School of Medicine. This will include performance in written examinations and Research & Critical Analysis assessment tasks.

In addition, international students must demonstrate English language minimum requirements:

IELTS Score - minimum overall: 7, Reading: 6.5, Writing: 6.5, Speaking: 6.5, Listening: 6.5

The English language entry criteria will be as indicated on the University website: www.uow.edu.au/prospective/international/english/index.html

Note: Honours students will only be taken where an approved supervisor and project is available.

Formal enrolment in the GSM Honours programme is completed through SOLS upon the receipt of a formal University of Wollongong offer. For assistance with enrolment see the Honours Coordinator.

The Honours programme has been structured to match the timing of Australian and North American internship/training programmes. Students who proceed with the December - June option will be able to commence Australian internships in midyear (noting that some but not all Local Health Districts take midyear interns). Students pursuing training opportunities in North America will be able to commence at the beginning of that programme which is midyear.

Students electing to undertake the Honours programme in March - December, in line with current NSW Health Policy, will be eligible to commence NSW internships in the following year.

In order to attend clinical placements, students are required to have a Criminal Record Check and complete a Prohibited Employment Declaration. Students are also required to comply with NSW Health Department Circular 'Occupational Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases', available on the NSW Health Department website. Students who do not meet these requirements will not be able to attend clinical placements and therefore will not be able to enrol in the course. Students should read the information found in the Additional Information section.

Medical students are registered with the National Medical Board, and subject to the provisions of that body in relation to issues affecting fitness to practice. Further information can be found at http://www.medicalboard.gov.au

Professional Recognition

Upon completion of a University of Wollongong Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery, graduates will have an extensive range of career options. Graduates may undertake work in private or public health, research, aid organizations, the defence forces, or a combination of these areas. There are many specialties available to graduates after completion of the University of Wollongong Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery, including:

Accident and emergency, anaesthesia, dermatology, general practice, geriatric medicine, intensive care, medical administration, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, occupational medicine, ophthalmology, paediatrics, oncology, cardiology, neurology, pathology, histopathology, microbiology, psychiatry, public health medicine, radiology, rehabilitation medicine, sexual health, sports medicine or surgery.

The honours programme adds value to the basic MBBS degree, substantially broadening the skills-base, and sets the graduate apart from the bulk of students who have completed a bachelor's degree only, providing enhanced career and employment prospects.

Completion of the honours research programme to a high standard, and especially success in publication of the research, may increase the opportunity for selection into specialist training programmes and increase choice for postgraduate clinical placements.

Honours also represents the most direct path for students to gain entry into a doctoral level higher degree research programme (PhD). Achievement of 1st Class honours will make the graduate competitive for an Australian or University Postgraduate Research Award (scholarship) providing financial assistance to complete a doctorate.

After completion of the MBBS degree, Australian graduates are required to complete an intern year in an Australian hospital as a prerequisite to full medical registration. This requirement can be completed before or after undertaking the honours programme. These internships may not be available to graduates who are not Australian citizens.
