Overview

Students who have fulfilled the requirements of a Bachelor degree with a major in a discipline offered by the Faculty may apply to undertake an Honours degree by discussion with the Head of School and degree coordinator, and by completion of the appropriate application form.

The Honours degree provides students with the first real opportunity to undertake research on a topic of their interest and to integrate their disciplinary skills with project management. The Honours year is particularly important as it represents a gateway to future research opportunities both in the form of higher degrees and as a career in research, or to other vocations that require advanced analytical and research skills. Completion of Honours commonly leads to more rapid advancement in a chosen career.

Entry Requirements / Assumed Knowledge

Admission into Honours is competitive. To be considered for entry into the Bachelor of Science Honours, students will:

    1. have qualified for, or be a graduate with, a relevant pass degree from the University of Wollongong, or hold an equivalent qualification from another institution;

    2. normally have completed at least 24 credit points of 300-level subjects relating to the Honours discipline;

    3. normally have a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 70% for the 24 credit points of 300-level subjects relating to the Honours discipline;

    4. be aware that admission is also subject to an appropriate project being available, and acceptance by an academic supervisor;

    5. complete a separate application form for entry to Honours;

    6. be recommended by the relevant Head of School; and

    7. be approved by the Dean or Associate Dean of the Faculty.

By arrangement with the Schools involved, it is possible to undertake Joint Honours, a research thesis spanning two disciplines.

Course Requirements

To graduate with an Honours degree, candidates undertake a research thesis within their major study discipline, together with any required coursework.

In the Faculty of Science, Bachelor of Science Honours degrees can be taken in the following disciplines:

The Honours grade will be calculated in accordance with Method 1. For further information refer to General Course Rules Section 8.
