Overview

The Master of Autism is specifically designed to enable professionals and parents to take a leadership role in multidisciplinary areas to create and implement programs and strategies that support individuals on the autism spectrum to realise their goals and achieve in school, employment, home and community settings. Students in this program will develop the knowledge and expertise necessary to analyse and translate current autism research in order to lead others to establish socially inclusive policies and structures and implement evidence-based learning and employment programs that enable and support and empower individuals on the autism spectrum in a range of sectors and environments. Students will also have an opportunity to critically examine latest research and knowledge in relevant areas such as the use of technology, collaborative communities of practice, leadership, transitions, and aetiology and biology of autism spectrum disorder, and will develop the skills necessary to utilise research to evaluate and examine the effectiveness of current practices.

Course Learning Outcomes

Course Learning Outcomes are statements of learning achievement that are expressed in terms of what the learner is expected to know, understand and be able to do upon completion of a course. Students graduating from this course will be able to:

1 Demonstrate an advanced understanding of theory and practice related to learning, employment, social inclusion and professional practice for individuals on the autism spectrum in national and/or international contexts.
2 Conduct independent research and inquiry, involving theoretical conceptualisation, innovative ideas and personal initiative to design, evaluate, implement, and analyse research related to socially inclusive practice for individuals on the autism spectrum.
3 Demonstrate expert, specialised technical and creative skills to implement learning and employment programs which incorporate the perspectives and empower the self-determination and self-advocacy of individuals on the autism spectrum and their families.
4 Demonstrate professional leadership to undertake key roles in research and practice and to interpret, communicate and transfer research knowledge and skills to empower individuals on the autism spectrum, their parents, and professionals.
5 Analyse critically, reflect on and synthesise information to make high level, independent judgements regarding evidence-informed practice and to solve complex problems to facilitate the inclusion of individuals on the autism spectrum in education and employment programs.

Course Structure

The Master of Autism requires:

  1. The successful completion of 72 credit points, comprising:  
    1. 48 credit points of core subjects. EDGZ921 and EDGS951 must be completed within the first session of study. EDGS936 must be completed in the final session of the degree; and 
    2. 24 credit points selected from the list of electives.
  2. No more than 24 credit points will be at 800 level.
