Overview

The Master of Occupational Health and Safety Extension at UOW provides an integrated teaching and research program to promote the highest level of safety by inspiring the next generation of Occupational Health and Safety Professionals. The degree provides an intensive program of study and offers the opportunity to specialise in either Health Promotion or OHS Research. Knowledge and skill development throughout the course is applied to a research-based capstone workplace project in the final stage of the degree to develop a high level of evidence-based professional practice.

Course Learning Outcomes

Course Learning Outcomes are statements of learning achievement that are expressed in terms of what the learner is expected to know, understand and be able to do upon completion of a course. Students graduating from this course will be able to:

3 Effectively interpret, articulate and convey occupational health & safety knowledge, skills and ideas to collaborate and engage with people in different settings and different cultural environments.
4 Describe and demonstrate strategies to acknowledge, appreciate and respect diversity.
5 Develop strategies to maintain personal integrity within the field of OHS.
6 Identify, critically evaluate, reflect on, synthesize and apply appropriate resources and technologies for professional practice in OHS in order to function effectively in the digital environment.
7 Conceptualise key issues and concepts related to a range of contemporary public health sub-disciplines.

Course Structure

To qualify for award of this degree, a candidate must satisfactorily complete a total of at least 96 credit points including:

  1. 66 credit points of core subjects;
  2. One 6 credit point elective approved by the Academic Program Director; and
  3. A 24 credit point specialisation in either Health Promotion or OHS Research

as specified in below.

Students who commence in Spring session must complete the Health Promotion specialisation prior to commencing the core Occupational Health and Safety subjects.

SPECIALISATIONS

Specialisations are normally commenced after the core requirements are completed.  Students commencing in Spring session will complete the requirements for the Health Promotion specialisation first, before completing core requirements.  Students wishing to undertake the OHS Research specialisation will normally have completed the core requirements prior to the major project.

HEALTH PROMOTION SPECIALISATION

The Health Promotion specialisation must be taken by all students commencing in Spring session and is to be completed prior to commencing the core Occupational Health and Safety subjects.

Accreditation and Professional Recognition

The Master of Occupational Health and Safety (Extension) is accredited by the Australian Occupational Health & Safety Educators Accreditation Board (AOHSEAB).  Accreditation is being sought from the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) of the UK.
