Bachelor of Commerce Global – Bachelor of Laws (Honours) | 2020

Overview 

A Bachelor of Laws from UOW equips students with a comprehensive legal education: a world-class degree that provides a thorough grounding in the law, as well as a real-world focus on the essential practical skills and the social and ethical context in which the law operates. Students will also be exposed to relevant industry-driven content as part of their Commerce degree gaining a firm foundation in the principles of social responsibility, preparing them for success in their chosen career. The Bachelor of Commerce - Bachelor of Laws degree provides opportunities for students to combine their interest in law with business.

As a part of the Bachelor of Commerce Global, students will undertake their studies at three of the University of Wollongong’s global locations in their second year –Dubai, Hong Kong and Singapore, combined with three paid internships with one of our program sponsors in their third, fourth and fifth year of study. 

Entry Requirements & Credit Arrangements

Students are not able to directly enrol in this degree. If you are interested in undertaking Honours in law, you must have completed at least 124 credit points of compulsory law subjects. You must also have achieved a weighted average mark (WAM) of 70% or more based on all 100 and 200 level core LLB subjects.

Course Learning Outcomes 

Course Learning Outcomes are statements of learning achievement that are expressed in terms of what the learner is expected to know, understand and be able to do upon completion of a course.

Course Structure 

To qualify for award of the degree, the Bachelor of Commerce Global - Bachelor of Laws, a candidate must successfully complete at least 252 credit points, comprised of:

1. All compulsory Law subjects (114 credit points) as set out in the table below;
2. Three elective subjects to the value of 18 credit points from the Bachelor of Laws Elective Law Schedule - see Bachelor of Laws (Graduate Entry) for elective options;
3. LLB4402 Legal Research Thesis (12 credit points)
4. Subjects to the value of at least 108 credit points from the Bachelor of Commerce Course Program, including;
   1. core subjects (60 credit points) as set out below. These credit points include three Commerce Global internship subjects, including in-company placements, and a capstone subject.
   2. at least one major (48 credit points) from the Bachelor of Commerce (excluding the Business Law major).

Candidates for this degree will be required to maintain a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 75 each year for the Bachelor of Commerce Global to continue in the program.

*From 2022 the capstone subject is Integrative Business Capstone (BUS 331).

 Part-time Study
A student is considered part-time when they are enrolled in less than 75% of the standard load for a session. If you are seeking to complete your undergraduate law degree part-time, you are required to complete a minimum of 12 credit points (2 subjects) per session. PLEASE NOTE: Core first year Commerce subjects to be undertaken at overseas UOW locations may vary slightly for students studying majors in Economics, International Business or Public Relations. Students should consult with the Course Director for advice on subject selections.

Majors

Students will complete one major from the Bachelor of Commerce. Refer to the Handbook page for available majors. It is necessary for students to seek appropriate advice on their options for majors and subject sequences.

The Business Law major is not available in this degree.

Compulsory Work Placement / Online Components

Undertaking a work integrated learning experience during your university education is now a significant contributor to being competitive in securing employment in your field of choice when you graduate from UOW.

Law students will complete a Legal Internship subject (LLB3397). This subject is the vehicle for a practical placement designed to expose students to the application of the law in practice; enable students to understand the importance of developing the skills of legal research; communication, drafting, practice management and problem solving; and enable students to observe and reflect upon the values, ethical standards and conduct of the legal profession in practice.

The Law degree contains a total of 140 hours over 4 weeks of compulsory workbased placements. This course may also contain compulsory components to be completed online.

As part of the Bachelor of Commerce Global students will also undertake three Business internships in their third, fourth and fifth year. These are COMM191, COMM292 and COMM392 respectively.

Professional Recognition/Accreditation

The UOW Bachelor of Laws (single LLB or in combination with another degree) is accredited by the Legal Procession Admission Board (LPAB) as satisfying the academic requirements necessary for admission to the Australian legal profession.

On completion of the Bachelor of Laws, a student who wishes to practise as a barrister or solicitor must also undertake some form of professional practical training, the requirements for which vary between each state and territory of Australia. In New South Wales, a student who intends to qualify for admission to practice isrequired to undertake a practical legal training (PLT) course accredited by the LPAB, followed by or incorporating a period of practical experience in a law-related setting.Practical experience gained by students in LLB3397 Legal Internship may be counted towards this practical experience requirement. Graduates should check with their PLT provider.A list of LPAB accredited PLT courses can be found on the LPAB website.

Students who intend to practise as solicitors after admission will be subject to a period of restricted practice and the mandatory continuing legal education requirements. Further information is available from the Law Society of New South Wales.

Students who intend to practise as barristers after admission will be required to read with a senior barrister for a period of time and to undertake the Bar Readers' Course and Bar Examination before being qualified to take briefs on their own account.
