Overview
The Master of Media and Communications provides theoretical background and advanced skills in media studies and public relations. The program is intended to prepare professionals for work in a new field or to support and polish the skills of those already working in an area of media and communications. While emphasis is placed on conditions of work in the UAE and the greater Middle East region, the theories and skills are applicable around the world in developed as well as emerging markets.
The direction in media and communications in the 21st century has been toward working alone as well as in teams on projects of all sizes. Today’s journalist or PR specialist often functions as a one-person operation responsible for writing, recording audio and video, editing, and producing material for various platforms. Higher level versions of these skills figure in feature films and documentaries.
Course Learning Outcomes
Students graduating from the Master of Media and Communications will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of and synthesise historical, theoretical, technological, legal and ethical aspects of media and communications.
- Apply skills, methods, processes and technology with creativity to create media products in a real world context.
- Understand and apply the techniques of collaborative practice, ethical practice and networking within professional and industry contexts to produce media products.
- Creatively apply skills to produce content for new and emerging media platforms.
- Independently plan and execute a substantial research based project or piece of scholarship that demonstrates advanced understanding and critical analysis of the area of study.
Course Structure
There are two entry levels to the Master of Media and Communications. Students without suitable undergraduate qualification will be required to complete 72 credit points, including the two foundations subjects outlined below. Students who are eligible will complete 60 credit points as per the table below, receiving advanced standing for the two foundation subjects.
Candidates are required to complete 9 subjects (60 cp) according to the sequence of study listed below. There are 6 compulsory subjects that are required to be completed along with 3 elective subjects to be selected from the appropriate major.
